With the publication of his new cookbook Hardcover, food writer Robert Lustig, Jr. has collected his best cookbook covers in a series that spans the past fifty years.
While many of the books he covers, from the original French toast cookbooks to the latest cookbook to the classics of the culinary arts, have sold out, he says he’s still looking for some more.
“There’s been a lot of great books published,” he said.
“But I’m trying to get some new stuff.”
Lustig’s latest cookbooks, Hardcover Classic and Classic, focus on food and food history.
His cookbook for the year 2017 is called The Book of the Year, a nod to the book’s first edition in 1970, and its subsequent popularity.
It features recipes for a number of the dishes that he’s used to writing about over the years, including macaroni and cheese and grilled cheese sandwiches, plus heaps of other classic favorites like a shrimp and grits dinner.
His other cookbook is called the Book of Food, and it’s about food and cooking from the beginning, with the emphasis on the food itself.
The book includes recipes for classic American food, including roast beef and beef ribs, and some of the country’s best-loved dishes, such as grilled chicken and braised chicken.
While the covers and images of some of these dishes are gorgeous, there are also a few that are pretty much unusable.
Some of Lustig “is just a lot, a lot,” he told the BBC, which was also featured on the BBC’s The Food Network show, The Cooking Show.
He said he had “a lot of fun” with his new book, but “I was kind of annoyed” with some of its covers, like the “dumb duck and the dumb shrimp,” the book that came with the paperback of his best-selling cookbook The Book Of Food.
“I just felt like it was just a little bit silly,” Lustig said.
But he does like the images of the recipes.
“It makes me think of food, and what a food book can do for us as human beings,” he added.
“That’s what I want to share with people.”
