He was the publisher of The New York Times Book Review in 1875, The New Yorker Book Review from 1879, and his books were published in over a dozen languages.
The New Jersey Historical Society holds his letters as a treasure trove, and Henry James is listed among the 100 most influential people in American history.
He died in 1895 at the age of 89.
